read before you buy this tile

do i need to seal strata linea tiles?

like most natural stone, strata linea requires sealing (before & after grouting) to prevent staining and help with repelling water.

if your tile is porous or if using a dark grout, clé recommends Stonetech Heavy Duty Sealer from laticrete as a pre-grout treatment.

for all other sealing and protecting, clé recommends Stonetech BulletProof Sealer from laticrete.

for more information about sealing please see our strata linea material guidelines.

do you offer trim for your strata linea tile?

at clé we follow the international model of no trim and highly recommend our clients to do the same. below are the trim alternatives we recommend for this collection.

- if your project needs to turn a corner either inwardly or outwardly, mitering the tiles to meet seamlessly in a corner gives it the cleanest, crafted finish.
- a visible stone tile edge can be polished to make the side match the main surface of the tile.
- like with any of our tiles, you can also build out the sheetrock so that the surface of the finished sheetrock is flush with the surface of the tile.

how do i take care of my strata linea tiles?

the natural stones that make up the strata collection (marble, limestone, travertine, etc.) are chemically sensitive so only mild ph neutral cleaners should be used.

clé recommends laticrete cleaning products, please see our strata linea installation & maintenance guide for more information.

what type of finish should i expect with this collection?

our strata linea tiles come with a polished surface. polishing is a surface treatment in which the tile is ground down to the very finest level to give it a shiny look.

what types and levels of variation and imperfections should i expect?

the strata linea collection will exhibit a polished surface and color variations due to the striations and diverse range of tones found in each stone.

tiles may be exposed to moisture and/or condensation during production or shipping which may affect the color of the tiles once received.  setting tiles out to dry prior to installation will return return the color to normal.

due to the natural materials and production process of strata linea tiles, there will be degrees of variation in color, shade and size in your order. many of the strata linea stones also display natural pores or pits. keep in mind that this is a post-consumer, recycled material that is meant to be imperfect. it is important to blend the tiles from all boxes once they arrive and place them in their installation area to ensure you have the layout you want before installing.

variation and imperfection ratings:

strata linea tiles are rated 'level 4 heavy' for color variation, 'level 1 smooth' for texture variation, and 'level 1 slight' for size variation.

see illustrations in the technical specifications section above, and read more about the ratings in our tile variation & imperfections guide.

how do I sample strata linea tiles?

each sample features one 12 inch tile from your selected bundle and a set of 10 stone chips constituting the stones found in strata linea.

how will my strata linea samples compare to my actual order?

as noted in the variation and add on orders sections of our faq, strata linea is composed of natural stone which will exhibit degrees of variation in color and shade, therefore there will be variation in color and shade across batches.

this means that your sample may not be a perfect match with your actual order, and that your add-on order may not be a perfect match to either.

how are strata linea bundles sold?

clé sells strata linea bundles in three different plank widths: 3”, 4”, or 5”, with each bundle including a set number of tiles in 12”, 18”, and 24” lengths.

each strata linea bundle features a mix of ten types of stone: travertine, ajloun, jerusalem, sahrawi, ma'an, karak, beirzeit, daba'a, carrara and crema.

please note: stones cannot be individually specified. while every stone will be represented within each bundle, amounts of each stone to be provided can not be guaranteed. the overall color distribution within each bundle will lean neutral, with gray, pink, and purple accents.

some strata linea pieces come with mesh backing for added reinforcement. please follow the standard installation instructions for the reinforced pieces as described in our installation & maintenance guides.

why do you suggest i order at least 15% more than my measurements?

industry standard suggests adding at least 15% overage due to tile cuts,
potential breakage, or future repairs.

however, the strata linea collection is made up of recycled and repurposed natural stone and will feature a wide variation in color.  Also, many of the strata linea stones also display natural pores or pits.  If these features do not fit your project’s needs, we recommend ordering 20-30% overage.  This will allow your contractor to cherry-pick the tiles most desirable for your project.

for more information related to ordering and shipping, please be sure to visit our shipping and returns and delivery information resource pages.

grout

clé recommends cementitious a 1/16” grout joint with this collection.

clé recommends using mortar and unsanded cementitious grout that comply with the ANSI A118 or ISO 13007 classifications suitable for your project.  Please consult with your installation professional to make these determinations.

grout color selection is always up to our client and/or their design professional. however, clé is often asked for our opinion on best grout selections for our tiles. and due to the large array of grout colors that are now available, clé would like to offer this general guideline on a grout color selection for any of your clé tiles.

first, have your professional tile contractor complete your tile installation, except for the grout portion.

next, when ready to grout, ask your contractor to bring ALL grout color charts from his preferred grout manufacturers, for your review.

lastly, choose a time of day when you are most pleased with the lighting in your space (either natural lighting, installed lighting or a blend of both). during that lighting and time of day, select the grout color that best matches your tile selection.

if you are working with highly color-variegated tiles or a combination of tiles, we recommend that you follow the above recommendations—but match your grout to the color in your installation that you would like to accentuate.

for more information about grouting please see our strata linea installation & maintenance guide.

our bundles–which come in different lengths and widths–can be mixed for a truly bespoke installation, offering almost infinite possibilities. with their remarkable colors and embedded ancient fossils, reclaimed surfaces have never looked quite so good.

a collaboration with rula yaghmour

architect and desginer rula yaghmour has taken a simple idea – repurposing stone left over from construction projects – and created a beguiling line of objects and furniture called kutleh (the arabic word for block). while kutleh’s projects center around bonding layers of stone into a mass block, clé collaborated with yaghmour on creating strata linea, a tile line of different sized planks that feature the rich variety of leftover, highly sought-after stone.
